Giraffe Class is in the Step 3 phase at Valley. There are 8 children who have a range of complex needs including sensory impairments. Working alongside the teacher are 3 teaching assistants and medical support staff. The large room has access to the KS2 playground which has a sensory garden and a range of interesting and varied surfaces to play on including fully accessible swings. The children make full use of the many other facilities around Valley school.
The Valley curriculum in Step 3 continues to teach areas of learning though half termly topics and there is an increased emphasis on developing independence, self-confidence and resilience in preparation for the move to secondary school. Children in Step 3 experience lots of learning outside of the classroom, accessing adaptive cycling sessions, shops and other out of school trips. There is an opportunity for children to participate in a residential outdoor pursuits holiday in the Lake District.
Towards the end of Year 6, children leaving Valley are supported in their move to secondary education and many of our pupils move on to Heaton School in Heaton Moor. We have close links with the potential receiving schools, and arrange visits and share information to ensure the transition process for each child is as smooth as possible.
