Squirrels
Squirrel Class is part of ‘Step 2’ and caters for 8 children in Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2, who are predominantly on the autistic spectrum and are supported by a teacher and 6 teaching assistants. The classroom is split up into several areas, including an outdoor space, which provides a safe and low distraction environment to aid learning.
The curriculum is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which enables us to use play as the vehicle for all of our learning. All sessions are very hands on and heavily resourced based in order to promote engagement, exploration and fun.
Our focus is to enable pupils to learn how to communicate their needs effectively, manage their sensory needs and become as independent as possible in their daily routines. These areas of learning are incorporated into each child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP), through liaison with a multi-disciplinary team, and their personal targets are addressed through the different areas of learning.
Children also have regular access to the white room (with multi-sensory equipment), the rainbow room (ball pool) and Sensory Integration room (with swings) in order to support their teaching and learning as well as help meet their sensory needs throughout the day.
